# Basic Start and Roles

For some time, you have lived in [Philly](../300_Locations/Philly.md), a city of [the Kinlands](../../../Setting/World/Regions/The%20Kinlands.md) founded upon peace and unity. Through **the Gift**, every resident receives food, clothing, shelter, and basic medical care—perhaps one reason you have not risked an adventurer’s life before now. Yet everyone quietly suspects that those who break the law, knowingly or otherwise, disappear into distant fields, mines, and factories. Philly is also home to the [University of Arcana](../400_Characters/Factions_Groups/University%20of%20Arcana.md), one of the world’s great centers of learning. Whether you studied there or merely saw its notice, you have answered an urgent call for people with unusual abilities or training to join a second expedition into [Genosia](../../../Setting/World/Genosia/Genosia.md), the Realm of the Fallen God.

Every character has recently performed ordinary work for the Collective, regardless of training or social standing. You can choose or roll for a role.

Consider:

> **What work have you recently performed to give back for the Gift—and did you take pride in it, merely endure it, or resent every hour?**

> ### Recent Work for the Gift
>
> Every resident is expected to give labor so that everyone may receive the Gift. Hazardous service counts at four times ordinary labor: **two hazard hours fulfill one standard eight-hour workday**. Firefighting and service as a House companion both qualify.
